About the Program
Study Irish history, science, engineering, and more in Ireland’s beautiful western coastal region. Known for proudly preserving its language and culture, Galway has a youthful, bohemian vibe, thanks in part to a sizable student presence.

The University of Galway was known as the National University of Ireland, Galway until 2022.

About Galway
A thriving college town, Galway offers a vibrant and diverse population, yet retains a quaint, small-town feel. Open-air markets, museums, shops and restaurants add to Galway's appeal.

Program Benefits
  • Youthful and lively city filled with art and music
  • Located in a Gaeltacht area, where the Irish language and culture is celebrated and preserved
  • Courses that focus on Irish history, arts, commerce, engineering or sciences
  • An active Student Union that sponsors more than 50 social and cultural clubs and societies

Scholarships
IFSA scholarships are primarily need-based and factor in any additional cost your study abroad program might have over home school tuition. The awards are $500 for summer programs, $1,500 for semester programs and $2,500 for full year programs. These scholarships may apply to any IFSA program, with the exception of our custom programs.

Program Details

Eligibility: 9.0 cumulative GPA. In order to qualify for upper division courses, 3-4 courses should be completed in the intended field of study prior to participation.

Advising Notes: Most IFSA Butler programs require a faculty reference but not all, depending on the university partner. Contact a program adviser for specific program requirements. The credit system at Irish universities varies from the US and students typically take 5-7 courses per semester to equal 15 semester units or 3.75 courses at Scripps. Because most classes carry .5 Scripps credit, students must obtain permission from the corresponding department at Scripps, to combine two courses from the same department in order to fulfill a major or minor requirement.

Visa Information: After acceptance, your program will provide you with specifics about the visa required. The embassy site will have information on visa requirements for planning purposes.

Budget Planning: For budget planning purposes, click here to view the current cost of living comparison between Galway and Los Angeles.
