Stand Alone Programs (taught in English)

Stand alone programs are those developed for US students by a study abroad organization  Classes are taught in English and are most commonly offered in locations where students are not able to study the host language in Claremont prior to departure.
  • Classes are with U.S. students, taught in English in a range of subjects.
  • Even though the classes are taught in English, students must meet the specific Scripps language requirement in locations where the language is taught in Claremont. If a student has met the foreign language GE in another language, students can petition the appropriate language department to see if participation might be approved with a lower level of language preparation.
  • Limited enrollment in university classes with local students is possible if proficient in the host country language.
  • Friendships with locals require a concerted effort on the part of the student and strategic housing choices.  Programs will support these efforts to connect with local clubs and organizations as a way of meeting locals.
  • Housing options vary by program but often include homestays, or student apartments.
  • All Scripps students are required to study the local language as one of their classes on the program.
  • Housing options typically involve commuting to the program center and classrooms, potentially up to 45 minutes, and students should be prepared to use public transportation (metro trains, buses) or walking or riding bicycles.
