Information for Parents and Families

To the Family and Friends of Scripps Fall 2021 SAGE Participants:

It has been a privilege to work with your student while preparing for a study away experience next semester - one of the most unusual ever. The students who are still planning to participate in a SAGE program have shown much determination and grit while facing the challenges and frequent changes to their plans and we commend them all. These qualities will serve them well in studying abroad and bode well for a successful experience.

This message is to provide some information we hope you will find helpful. We conducted an orientation for students earlier to go over the details of credit for study abroad, passports, how finances work, and general details of health and safety issues, visas, insurance, flights and other logistical matters. Additionally, the program sponsor will be providing information on the specific details for the program. However, there are many factors involved in getting ready to study abroad or on an internship program in the US so we have developed the A-Z Pre-Departure Handbook as a reference for all the Scripps specific information and other helpful tips we have collected from students over the years (currently being updated, will be posted soon). Students will have access to this information on the password protected section of the SAGE website. We suggest students familiarize themselves with the index and the information they have at their fingertips.

Scripps students participate in approved programs administered by other colleges, universities, and study abroad organizations. Program approval is based on the appropriateness of the program’s offerings as a match to the academic and personal goals of Scripps students. The College also reviews the level of student services provided and expects program compliance with the professional safety standards established in the field of International Education by our national professional organizations — the Forum on Education Abroad and the NAFSA National Association of International Educators Health and Safety Guidelines. Program sponsors who are planning to operate as vaccines against CoVid are available have taken multiple pre-cautions related to CoVid mitigation. Students will be subject to the guidance and policies determined by the foreign host government and are required to comply in all matters of health and safety.

In order for you to obtain timely answers to the questions you may have about program-specific details before departure, as well as once your student is on-site, it may be most efficient to contact the program sponsor directly. We are available to assist and answer any Scripps-specific questions and are happy to be in the loop on your correspondence with the program.
